Suicide Prevention for Black Boys -Dr. Robari Cartman
I arrived at Sister's Uptown Bookstore (1942 Amsterdam Avenue in New York) early as usual. I wanted to make sure my seat was up front because I was eager to hear what Dr. Robari Cartman had to say about the our young black men. We began with Sister Patrice on the drums. Little did I know that it was preparing us for such a deep conversation with Dr. Robari Cartman about the attacks that our young black boys are under in this day and age. The rise of suicide among our young black boys are at an all time high. They are told to not show emotions or to "man up!" The only emotions that they seem to be encouraged to display is anger and aggression. They have no safe haven to express themselves without being deemed soft, not man enough,...He spoke about the warning signs of suicide where he showed charts. He played videos by some amazing artists. Joyner Lucas rapped about depression and suicide. We watched Meek Mills speak on PTSD. The trauma of seeing black death over and over again in a community is severe. "The whole hood suffer from depression." Chicago Artist ,The Boy Illinois (PTSD)
I wept as we watched in silence a time map of humans being trafficked on slave ships. The silence made the viewing more riveting. I need to know my ancestors. I need to know my roots.
We watched different scopes of slave rebellions to show that our ancestors fought . Our ancestors hid secret messages in quilts, hair braiding, we poisoned slave masters, we connected with indigenous tribes, found ways intelligently to fight, survive, etc... Rapper Xtentacion(God rest his soul) talked about the power of music, soundwave and frequency, the power it has over the mind, etc... Words have power!
Future rapped about Molly and Percocet. What is that doing to our young black men's minds? Artists are compromising lives for money. On another note, J Cole raps about another way, "iMeditate." We listened to Robari Cartman. Dave East rapped about "Numbness." Dr. Robari Cartman speaks about the constant use of cellphones and showed us an article speaking on "Smartphones and Tablets Causing Mental Health Problems in Children As Young As Two!" We listened to G Herbo. We listened to Kendric Lamar. Overall this book signing was eye opening. Let's help our young people. Let's give our young black men a safe environment to express themselves. They shouldn't be ashamed of their sadness, fears, etc... It's okay to cry. Let support this man and get this book.
